Lyceum is a fork. So, the code has been independently developed from wordpress..

I have recently tried WordpressMU, and i haven't had any problems. Lyceum looks pretty much the same..

The recent WordpressMU is stable, but is still lacking...

here's a snippet FAQ from Lyceum website:

Q: How different is the Lyceum code from the WordPress code?
A: Almost every SQL statement has been changed. There have been many changes made to add security that is needed in a multi-blog environment. In terms of features and the vast majority of business logic, essentially none of the other code has been changed. Lyceum is currently synchronized with WordPress 2.x, and will continue to synchronize its codebase with future WordPress releases.

In theory they are the same.. but behind the scenes, it may be different.. for users in general.. NO DIFFERENCE AT ALL...

As I recall, <a href="http://photomatt.net/2006/03/01/wordpress-and-lyceum/" rel="nofollow">WordPress MU partitions groups of blogs across thousands of MySQL databases, whereas Lyceum took WordPress and modified every query so that all blogs were stored in a single database</a> (much like MT).
