NYT says YouTube is yanking clips

Update for my post YouTube to remove Daily Show clips?.

A story from the New York Times about You Tube removing video clips. They credit Jeff Reifman of News Cloud for breaking the news. Not sure if this means the clips from The Daily Show are really gone. I just did a search and found a bunch. Is YouTube removing clips only for them to be replaced?

YouTube Is Purging Copyrighted Clips

Hitting the financial jackpot, it appears, may have created some headaches for YouTube, the wildly popular video-sharing Web site that has agreed to be bought by Google for $1.65 billion in stock.

The site late last week began purging copyrighted material from Comedy Central, including clips from YouTube stalwarts like “The Daily Show With Jon Stewart,” “The Colbert Report” and “South Park.”

The action was “a result of third-party notification by Comedy Central,” according to one such e-mail message sent to a YouTube user, Jeff Reifman, who broke the news on the Web site NewsCloud.

A week earlier, nearly 30,000 clips of TV shows, movies and music videos were taken down after the Japanese Society for Rights of Authors, Composers and Publishers cited copyright infringement.

Its a bad idea to remove your clips from services like You Tube. Its free advertising with power beyond your wildest dreams. Letting us watch this video where we want to is the path to ULTIMATE COOL. Don’t you want us to think you are cool? Don’t you want us to love your shows? If you do then quit this 20th century idea of ownership. Again, I’m not wining because I’m loosing free stuff. I’m frustrated because people don’t understand Web 2.0 business and the future of creative expression online. Hey maybe we don’t need your video. We can always ignor it and make our own. The void you leave will be filled.

Why doesn’t Comedy Central try using the Creative Commons license?
