Wubi sounds pretty damn cool. No longer do you have to repartition your PC hard drive to install Linux. Dowload a Windows exe file to guide you through an Ubuntu install.
Is this running Ubuntu within a virtual environment or something similar?
No. This is a real installation, the only difference is that Ubuntu is installed within a file as opposed to being installed within its own partition. Thus we spare you the trouble to create a free partition for Ubuntu. And we spare you the trouble to have to burn a CD-Rom.
I haven’t tried Wubi. I already have Ubuntu Feisty Fawn installed. (The upgrade was a cinch btw… but that damn network install took HOURS.) Will report back when I get a chance to check this out.

Yeah, of course I tried the upgrade at work on release day, was doing other stuff (cause it was taking so long), and somehow hosed my system. So I started from scratch. Still need to do the upgrade on my home laptop. Hope it goes better. I'm still a fan tho.
I tried it a while back, but went back to running Ubuntu on VMware. Somehow, the trouble of switching back and forth wasn’t worth the performance increase of getting out of a virtual machine.
However, I’ve got a new laptop coming in the mail soon (a pretty decked out Acer 9300 with a 17″ widescreen) that I’m excited about making my attempt to finally completely ditch Windows on the desktop. I’ve had a home server I use for storage and web-testing that’s been running Slackware for several years now, and it’s still my favorite distribution on the server side, but Ubuntu’s clean look combined with a package manager and repositories that don’t leave me in dependency hell any more have finally won me over.
