Subject: Re: The State of Things audio

Thank you for your kind e-mail requesting that I remove the audio from my website.

Just for clarity I do not work at ibiblio. I hope I haven't shed a negative light on them. They graciously provide me with web space and e-mail for other projects. Just to be clear the audio you mentioned is not hosted on ibiblio.org or UNC web servers.

I understand your policy regarding audio. I assure you that my intentions were only in the spirit of sharing that the Internet embodies. My recording of "The State of Things" from my analog FM radio was purely self educational and falls under fair use. I do not have any commercial intentions or uses for this audio.

I really look forward to the archived audio of WUNC broadcasts. In our age of interactive media having free, as in money, access to audio at any time is much more than a convenience. It assures that it remains free, as in freedom. I encourage you to select file formats like MP3 and Ogg <http://www.xiph.org/ogg/vorbis/> to encode your audio in. This will help to ensure your audio archives become part of the future and the public commons of ideas.

A really good way to do this and hopefully make your lawyers happy is by placing your audio archives under a Creative Commons License. <http://creativecommons.org/>

The main reason I suggest these options is because of the importance of Public Radio. I am concerned for its future and that it become free from corporate influence and control. Because a large part of your funding is obtained from listeners during fund raisers, I believe that the public shouldn't have to be forced to use proprietary audio file formats and applications like Real audio and Windows Media.

Thank you for reading. I would be glad to remove the audio files of the 12.11.03 broadcast of "The State of Things." from my web server.
Thanks again for your kind words about my work and your pleasant approach to your request.

Sincerely,
Brian
